Clare Urmston

An experienced psychodynamic psychotherapist working in the NHS and in central York from premises on St. Saviourgate.

I have considerable experience working in psychiatry, initially as a psychiatric nurse and then as a psychotherapist within a specialist psychoanalytic service. I work with both individuals and couples using a psychodynamic approach, and aim to understand problems in how they relate to unconscious processes and early life difficulties.

I work mostly in person, but do offer some limited online therapy to both couples and individuals. Please email me to let me know what kind of help you are looking for, and we can arrange an initial phone call or Zoom meeting to see if working together might be feasible.

What I offer

Services

Couple therapy

If you are looking for shorter-term help in your relationship — perhaps going through a crisis or considering separation — or a long-term approach to address repeated patterns that are hard to understand, psychodynamic couple therapy can help.

This is an approach that can help to make sense of the roles we might get stuck in, relationship patterns that may link to childhood experiences, and how internal conflicts and unresolved issues can be lodged within our relationship dynamics. It can also be helpful in addressing why some couples find it impossible to separate, but are unsatisfied in their relationship.

Individual therapy

If you are having emotional difficulties, relationship issues, or perhaps don't understand what might feel wrong, psychotherapy can offer a space to try and make sense of problems. The relationship with the therapist can illuminate long-term patterns and dynamics that you might not be aware of, and provide an opportunity to understand yourself in new ways. This can be very freeing, and can offer real psychological change.

Psychodynamic work is weekly or twice-weekly and tends to be a longer-term approach; however, shorter-term therapy is also possible. I also work with trainees completing psychology, psychotherapy or counselling training.

Supervision

I offer psychodynamic supervision to professionals looking to develop their practice and explore psychodynamic ways of working. If you are a counsellor or psychotherapist with an interest in this, please contact me to discuss arrangements. This can be on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis.
